Aux lighting is one of the highest-ROI Jeep upgrades for night trails and camp setups—and also one of the easiest ways to buy the wrong bar. This page covers mount style, fitment (JK vs JL), wiring basics, and what to search on Amazon. Prefer search links over random ASINs; listings rotate.
Pick a mount that matches how you drive
- Upper windshield / A-pillar: great forward throw for trails. Watch hood clearance, soft-top clearance on JK, and glare if the bar sits too low in your sight line.
- Bumper / grille pods: lower mount, less “aircraft landing” look on the highway, better for ditch/rock lighting. Confirm bumper cutouts and winch fairlead clearance first.
- Cowl / ditch lights: fill side wash without a full-width bar. Easy add-on if you already have a bumper bar.
- JK (2007–2018) vs JL (2018+): brackets are not universal. Buy platform-specific mounts. Gladiator JT shares a lot with JL but still check listing fitment years.
Specs that actually matter
- Beam pattern: combo (spot + flood) is the usual sweet spot for one bar. Pure spot for long dirt roads; flood/pods for camp and side wash.
- Amp draw: a “50" 288W” bar can pull ~15–20A. Fuse near the battery, use a relay, and size wire for voltage drop—do not tap a random dash fuse.
- IP rating / build: look for sealed housings and decent mounts. Ultra-cheap no-name bars fail seals and brackets first.
- Street legality: many states restrict forward-facing aux lights on public roads. Use a switch and keep them off when other traffic is around. You are responsible for local law.

- JK windshield / upper LED light bar kits — JK brackets differ; soft-top owners should check clearance before buying a tall bar.

- Light bar wiring harness + relay kit — battery → fuse → relay → switch. Skip “tap a cigarette lighter” kits for high-draw bars.
Install checklist
- Dry-fit brackets with the hood and soft/hard top in the positions you actually use.
- Route loom away from sharp sheet metal and the radiator fan; grommet any firewall pass-through.
- Fuse within ~12" of the battery positive; ground to clean bare metal.
- Aim on a dark empty road: slight downward tilt beats blinding oncoming traffic.
- Recheck bolts after the first trail day—vibration loosens cheap hardware.
