Jeep Speedometer Error After Bigger Tires: How Much and How to Fix It
Guide · Updated October 27, 2026
Taller tires turn fewer times per mile, so your speedometer and odometer read low. On 35s, a Jeep that shows 65 mph may really be going faster. Here is how to estimate the error and fix it.
How big is the error?
- Error is roughly the ratio of new tire height to old. Going from about 32 to 35 inches is about a 9 percent increase.
- At an indicated 65 mph, that is around 71 mph real speed.
- Use the Tire & Gear Calculator to see your exact numbers and highway RPM.
How owners recalibrate
- JL, JK and JT: tire size is set electronically, usually with a handheld programmer or tuner, or by a dealer.
- TJ, YJ and XJ: many use a different speedometer gear in the transfer case output or an electronic speedometer calibrator, depending on year.
- Check with a GPS speed app after recalibration.
Gears matter too
Recalibration fixes the reading, not the power loss. If the Jeep feels slow on bigger tires, read when to regear for bigger tires.

Gear that helps
- Digital tire pressure gauge — check pressures cold, before you drive.
- Portable 12V air compressor — air back up after the trail or adjust at home.

FAQ
Does my odometer read wrong too?
Yes. It undercounts miles by about the same percent until recalibrated.
Is it illegal to drive with an uncalibrated speedometer?
Laws vary, but you are responsible for your real speed. Recalibrating is the safe fix.
Do I need to recalibrate for 33s?
The error is smaller, often 3 percent or so from stock JL tires, but many owners still recalibrate for accurate speed and shift points.
