Will 35-inch tires fit a JL Wrangler with a 2.5-inch lift?
Fitment answer · Updated October 27, 2026
Short answer
Usually yes. A 2.5-inch lift is one of the most common ways to fit 35s on a JL Sport, Sahara or Willys. Most owners get good clearance with the right wheel backspacing and bump stops sized to the lift. Some light rubbing at full flex is possible with wider 12.50 tires.

What you usually need
- Wheels with less backspacing than stock (or wheel spacers) so the tire clears the control arms and sway bar at full lock.
- Bump stop extensions matched to the lift so the tire cannot stuff into the fender at full compression.
- An alignment after install; many kits also need a track bar or adjustable control arms to center the axle.
- A narrower 35×11.50 clears more easily than a 35×12.50.
Regearing
On the 3.6 with factory 3.45 gears, 35s feel slow and the automatic hunts for gears; many owners regear to around 4.56 or 4.88. Trucks with 3.73 or 4.10 gears, or the 2.0 turbo, tolerate 35s better. Compare ratios in the Tire & Gear Calculator before you buy gears.
Other caveats
- A 35-inch spare is heavy; the factory carrier may need reinforcement.
- Recalibrate the speedometer after the swap.
- Heavier tires wear steering parts faster; inspect tie rods and the steering stabilizer more often.

FAQ
Do I need to trim fenders for 35s on a JL with 2.5 inches?
Usually not for normal driving. Heavy flex can touch the fender liners or flares, so some owners add high-clearance fenders or longer bump stops.
Is 2.5 inches enough lift for 35s on a JL?
For most owners, yes. It is a popular setup. A taller lift gives more flex room but costs more and can need more parts.
Do I need to regear for 35s on a JL?
It depends on your factory gears and engine. 3.45-geared JLs usually benefit most; check your numbers in the Tire & Gear Calculator.
