Will 35-inch tires fit a stock JL Wrangler Rubicon?
Fitment answer · Updated October 23, 2026
Short answer
Often yes, with small changes. The JL Rubicon has the most factory clearance of any JL, and many owners fit 35s (commonly 315/70R17) on stock suspension. Expect some rubbing at full flex unless you add bump stop spacers, and check wheel backspacing and the spare carrier.
What to check
- True tire size: “35-inch” tires vary in diameter and width by brand, and a narrower 35 (such as 35×11.50) clears more easily than a 12.50.
- Flex: on stock bump stops the tire can touch the fender liner or flare at full compression. Short bump stop spacers are a common, inexpensive fix.
- Wheels: factory Rubicon wheels often work; aftermarket wheels with less backspacing can rub at full lock.
- Many owners add a small leveling kit for extra room, but it is optional.
Regearing
The Rubicon’s factory gearing (commonly 4.10, depending on year and transmission) handles 35s better than other JL trims, so many owners drive on it as-is. If highway passing, towing or crawl ratio feel weak, a regear (often to around 4.88) is the usual next step. Compare ratios in the calculator first.
Other caveats
- A 35-inch spare is heavy; the factory carrier may need reinforcement or a spare that is one size smaller.
- Recalibrate the speedometer for accurate speed and odometer readings.
- Heavier tires add stress to steering parts; inspect tie rods and ball joints more often.
