Will 33-inch tires fit a JK Wrangler with a 2.5-inch lift?
Fitment answer · Updated October 23, 2026
Short answer
Usually yes. 33-inch tires are one of the most common sizes on a JK with a 2.5-inch lift, and most owners get good clearance with little or no trimming. Check true tire width and wheel backspacing, and recalibrate the speedometer.
What to check
- True tire size: “33-inch” tires vary in diameter and width by brand.
- Wheel backspacing: stock wheels usually work, but aggressive offsets can rub the control arms or fenders.
- An alignment after the lift, and bump stops that suit your tire at full compression.
Regearing
The lift itself does not require regearing; the bigger tire does. 33s are a modest step on a JK, and many owners are fine on stock gears, while others regear for better acceleration and towing, especially with the earlier 3.8 engine. Compare ratios in the Tire & Gear Calculator before you buy gears.
Other caveats
- Recalibrate the speedometer for accurate speed and odometer readings.
- Check that a full-size 33-inch spare fits the factory tire carrier.
- If you plan to move up to 35s later, buy wheels with that in mind.

FAQ
Do 33s rub on a JK with a 2.5-inch lift?
Usually only a little, if at all, with stock-style wheel offsets. Rubbing is more likely with wide tires or aftermarket wheels that have much less backspacing.
Is a 2.5-inch lift enough for 35s?
Sometimes, but it is tight. See 35s on a JK with a 2.5" lift.
Do I need to regear for 33s?
Not always. Many owners run stock gears; if the Jeep feels sluggish or you tow, a regear can help. Check the calculator for your numbers.
