Will 33-inch tires fit a Jeep Cherokee XJ?
Fitment answer · Updated October 23, 2026
Short answer
Usually only with a lift. The XJ comes on small tires, often around 28 to 29 inches, so 33s typically call for a lift of roughly 3 to 4 inches, trimming of the flares or wheel wells, and a regear. 31s are the more common first step.
What you usually need
- A lift, commonly 3–4 inches, depending on the tire and how much flex you want.
- Trimming of the wheel wells and fender flares to avoid rubbing at full flex.
- Wheels with suitable backspacing; many XJs use 15-inch wheels.
- An alignment after install, and attention to control arm and track bar geometry.
Regearing
XJ gearing is usually tuned for stock tires, and 33s are a big change, so many owners regear. Compare ratios in the Tire & Gear Calculator before you buy gears.
Other caveats
- The XJ is a unibody, so lifts can affect driveline angles; check driveshaft angles after install.
- Check axle, steering and brake condition first, since many XJs are old and bigger tires add stress.
- Recalibrate the speedometer, and check the bolt pattern (5×4.5 inch) for wheels.

FAQ
Do 31s fit a stock XJ?
Often with light trimming or minor rubbing at full lock. Check wheel width and backspacing.
How much lift do 33s need on an XJ?
Roughly 3 to 4 inches is common, but it depends on the tire, wheels and trimming.
Do I need to regear for 33s on an XJ?
Many owners do, especially with the 4.0 and an automatic, to recover acceleration and highway RPM.
