Will 33-inch tires fit a YJ Wrangler?

Fitment answer · Updated October 23, 2026

Short answer

Usually only with a lift. The YJ comes on small tires, often in the 28 to 30 inch range, so 33s typically call for a lift of roughly 3 to 4 inches or more, plus trimming, the right wheels and a regear. Many owners start with 31s.

What you usually need

Regearing

YJ gearing is usually low on highway ratio, and 33s are a big change, so many owners regear (often to around 4.56 or 4.88). Compare ratios in the Tire & Gear Calculator before you buy gears.

FAQ

Will 31s fit a YJ without a lift?

Often yes, with possible light rubbing at full lock or flex. Check your wheel width and backspacing.

Do I need to regear for 33s on a YJ?

Most owners do, since the stock ratios and engines struggle with taller tires.

Is a YJ different from a TJ for tire fitment?

Yes, the suspension and stock tires differ. See 33s on a TJ Wrangler.
